1. Awe – Experts say awe and wonder is an essential human emotion, in fact you could call it a salve for a turbulent mind. According to Judith T Moskowitz, “Awe is on the cutting edge of emotion research. Research done back in 1972 identified six basic emotions, and awe wasn’t one of them. The six basic emotions identified were anger, surprise, enjoyment, fear, and sadness. New research shows that awe is its own thing. Our bodies respond differently when we are experiencing awe than when we are feeling joy, contentment, or fear. We make different sounds, and show a different facial expressions. Awe activates the vagal nerves, slows our heart rate, relieves digestion and deepens breathing. How do we experience awe? Here are five common ways to experience awe.
Nature Awe: This type of awe arises from encounters with the natural world—such as witnessing breathtaking landscapes, powerful natural phenomena (like thunderstorms or waterfalls), or vast cosmic events (like meteor showers or eclipses). Nature awe often involves feelings of reverence, wonder, and insignificance in the face of nature’s grandeur.
Artistic Awe: Artistic awe stems from experiencing extraordinary human creations—be it visual art, music, literature, or performance. It involves a profound appreciation for human creativity and the ability of art to evoke intense emotions and transcend everyday experiences.
Relational Awe: Relational awe is triggered by encounters with other people—particularly through experiences that highlight exceptional kindness, courage, or selflessness. Witnessing acts of altruism or heroism can evoke feelings of admiration, respect, and a sense of interconnectedness with humanity.
Conceptual Awe: Conceptual awe emerges from grappling with abstract ideas, profound philosophical questions, or scientific discoveries that challenge our understanding of the universe. This type of awe often arises from contemplating the vastness of the cosmos, the mysteries of quantum physics, or the complexities of the human mind.
Experiential Awe: Experiential awe occurs during direct, immersive experiences that push the boundaries of our everyday perceptions. This could involve adventures like skydiving, exploring unfamiliar cultures, or engaging in intense spiritual or meditative practices. Experiential awe often involves a sense of awe through personal transformation or expanded consciousness.
These types of awe can overlap and interact in various ways, contributing to our overall sense of wonder and connection with the world around us all the while calming our turbulent and stressed minds. I will forever be in awe of the northern lights. The way they explode across the sky in ribbons and waves of colour is amazing to me. I would love to hear your moments of awe. Email me Here
